Recently, I’ve been privileged to work on a road junction project in London. It was part of a wider campaign to increase safety and visibility at a busy, multi-lane motorway junction. The client was looking to improve safety and visibility at this busy, multi-lane road junction, located in the heart of Knightsbridge. This article covers some of these key developments and what they mean for the Durability of Life study.
Safety: The junction is relatively safe and well lit, however, it does suffer from some key issues. The pavement is narrow, making it difficult for motor vehicles to overtake. There are also very few cycle facilities at the junction and the main cycle park are in disrepair. These two factors contribute to the fact that this junction has one of the highest rates of injury to road users in central London.
Durability: The pavement in the vicinity of the road is in a reasonably worn condition but has a few damaged pavement stones. The cycle facility is fairly secure despite the lack of facilities, however, the road is not clear due to a road bridge spanning the junction. A road safety study identified this junction as among the worst locations in London for cycle accidents, with almost one death every year at the location. A recent road safety campaign included a number of safety messages explaining the dangers and consequences of cycling on pavements.
Safety messages painted on the pavement warn “cyclists beware” and advise that car drivers should be alert for cyclists.
A cycle superhighway runs through the middle of the junction, linking up with the adjacent road networks and the centrally located City Center bus station. Unfortunately, despite being a central part of London’s cycle network, the road layout does not make it easy for cyclists to ride safely and quickly to their destinations and lacks any separation.
Convenience: Living close to this busy junction means that I can commute in comfort, rather than having to get out of my car to cross. I also find that I can park my car directly opposite the entrance, which makes life easier. There is no space to make room for cycling into the car park. The lack of cycle facilities means that you have to make way for cycling, which is much slower and more inconvenient and can cause traffic jams.
These three problems are evident in this junction in Twickenham. But there are other potential dangers in the area, and across London as a whole. For example, a lack of cycle parking places at bus stations leaves many commuters walking there, and it’s often easier to lose your place than to find it!
